Jürgen Pollak presents “Stuttgart night,” an impressive sequence of images of the night city. What usually dominates the city by day, seems to be hidden in a miraculous way at night: the roads and transport hubs in the Autostadt are deserted on Pollak’s images – as if someone had stopped live itself. What lies in the shades during the day, is bathed in bright light at night: underpasses, dark corners, entrances, passages, tunnels. Pollak’s images are anything but romanticized views of the city. He seeks neither the idyllic nor homeliness. On the contrary, he looks objectively and coolly aloof to what remains of a city when all movement is eliminated.

Was Stuttgart sonst bei Tag und bei Nacht beherrscht, scheint darin auf wundersame Weise ausgeblendet: Die Straßen und Verkehrsknotenpunkte in der Autostadt wirken auf Pollaks Bildern wie leergefegt, mit der Kamera zum Stillstand gebracht – so als hätte jemand das Leben selbst angehalten. Pollak läßt die grell ausgeleuchtete Bühne großstädtischer Selbstinszenierung zur Kulisse erstarren.
