Joachim Brohm | TYPOLOGIE 1979 in Düsseldorf

Typology 1979 is the title of Joachim Brohm’s (*1955) most recent monographic book published by MACK/London. The artist also chose to give the same retrospective title to a series of photographs he took in 1979 while studying at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. At the time, black and white photography was commonly accepted as the standard amongst European artists, while first articles about documentary colour photography in the US were being published for a specialized audience to read. This is when Brohm dedicated himself to the truthful representation of ordinary subject matter in muted colours. Typologie 1979 is his earliest group of such works. It is devoted to recreational places and the activities of people living in the artist’s immediate environment at that time, the Ruhr area.
